Escape to Paradise: Headlands Hotel, Austinmer - My Coastal Conundrum (and it's mostly good!)
Okay, folks, buckle up. I'm back from attempting to "escape to paradise" at the Headlands Hotel in Austinmer, and let me tell you… it's a mixed bag. Like, a beautiful, ocean-breeze-in-your-hair, seagull-screeching-in-your-ear mixed bag. This isn't your sterile, perfectly curated travel blog review. This is real, raw, and honestly, a little bit scattered, just like my brain after a weekend of trying to relax.

Now that the robot overlords are happy, let's dive into the messy, wonderful, and sometimes slightly ridiculous world of Headlands Hotel.
Getting There & Getting In (The "Will I Ever Find My Room?" Phase)
First off, Accessibility: The website boasts about access, and… well, it's a bit of a mixed bag. The Elevator is a godsend, obviously, because the hotel is built on a hillside. However, navigating the grounds with a wheelchair would require a bit of careful planning. Some areas, like the pool, seemed reasonably accessible, but I definitely spotted some stairs leading to various areas. Definitely call ahead and clarify your specific needs. Facilities for disabled guests ARE available but it is not clear what they are.
Check-in/out [express] and Check-in/out [private] options exist. They whisk you through it. No more waiting in long lines!
Car park [free of charge], yay! Always a bonus. Though, on a busy weekend, it was a bit of a free-for-all. Valet parking is an option. And there's even a Car power charging station! Modern!
The Room: A Little Slice of Heaven (with a Few Annoyances)
My room (a Non-smoking one, thank heavens) was… stunning. Seriously, Ocean view, check. Blackout curtains, double check. Woke up with the sun streaming in, and didn't get a wink of sleep because of all the bright light. The Window that opens let the sea breeze in - pure bliss. And the Extra long bed was a godsend for this tall gal. Loved the Bathrobes and the Slippers too. Thoughtful touches!
The bathroom! A Separate shower/bathtub, yay! The Toiletries were decent, nothing to write home about, but functional. They provide Free bottled water. The Mini bar was a bit pricey, but hey… welcome to hotel life, right?
Now for the gripes. The Alarm clock was a relic from the 90s that I could not figure out. The Soundproofing was… well, let’s just say I heard every seagull that decided to have a morning meeting. The Wifi? Yes, it was Free Wi-Fi in all rooms! And while it worked… it was sometimes a little flaky. I had more than one moment just staring at the rotating circle of "loading" on my laptop. And I wanted to work! Internet access – wireless was a must.
A small observation: The Additional toilet was a plus, but I kept forgetting it was there.
Dining, Drinking, and Snacking: My Stomach Was a Happy Camper (and Sometimes a Little Confused)
Okay, the food. This is where Headlands truly shines. The Restaurants are fantastic. I had my eye on the Asian cuisine in restaurant, it was like being transported to a street food market in somewhere exotic, like Kuala Lumpur, with a stunning ocean view. There was a Salad in restaurant and a Soup in restaurant. I didn't go for the Desserts in restaurant as I'm not a sweet tooth.
Room service [24-hour]. And it's pretty freaking good (and necessary after a few margaritas at the Poolside bar).
Breakfast [buffet]: Okay, this was… a battlefield. But a delicious battlefield. The Western breakfast was solid, your typical scrambled eggs, bacon, and sausages. The Asian breakfast was great to experience. The Coffee/tea in restaurant was always flowing, which fueled my caffeine addiction. Breakfast takeaway service was available.
Happy Hour: Well, let's just say those margaritas are dangerous. But delicious. The Bar itself is a great place to chill, with good music, a lively atmosphere.
Food for thought: I'm not sure if there was a Vegetarian restaurant. But there were alternative meals, so that's a plus.
Things to Do & Ways to Relax: Spa Days and Poolside Bliss (Mostly!)
The Swimming pool [outdoor] is gorgeous. The Pool with view is a total Instagram moment. I basically lived there. Lounging in the sun, reading a book, occasionally glancing up to make sure I wasn’t being dive-bombed by a seagull.
The Spa – now this is where things got really good. I had a Massage that melted my shoulders. I also got a Body scrub, followed by a Body wrap. Bliss! I didn't try out the Foot bath and Sauna though. The Pool with view was enough for me.
For the fitness freaks, they have a Gym/fitness area, although I didn’t make it there. Bicycle parking is available.
Cleanliness and Safety: Safe in a Post-Covid World
Okay, this is important. They clearly take cleanliness seriously. I saw Hand sanitizer stations everywhere. They're big on Anti-viral cleaning products. Daily disinfection in common areas. My room was spotless. They said Rooms sanitized between stays. There was even a Room sanitization opt-out available, if you’re feeling extra eco-conscious.
They follow Physical distancing of at least 1 meter. Staff trained in safety protocol. Safe dining setup. I felt safe, which is a huge relief.
They offer Cashless payment service – a definite plus.
Services & Conveniences: The Little Extras That Make a Difference (and Some Misses)
The Concierge was helpful, arranging a late check-out because, let's be honest I needed that extra hour to just breathe before leaving. They offer Daily housekeeping. The Laundry service was efficient and relatively painless.
Business facilities are available. There are Meeting/banquet facilities and Meetings. They provide On-site event hosting. There's an Indoor venue for special events and Outdoor venue for special events. They also have Audio-visual equipment for special events, which is useful.
For the Kids: Family Friendly (Mostly)
Headlands seems genuinely Family/child friendly. They offer Babysitting service (always a lifesaver!). There are Kids facilities available. I didn't see any Kids meal, so that could be a problem.
The Little Quirks That Make It Memorable (and Slightly Chaotic)
- The seagull situation. Seriously. They're everywhere. Be warned.
 - The staff. Generally, they were friendly, but sometimes a bit scattered.
 - The sheer beauty of the location. Makes up for any shortcomings.
 - The feeling of being truly away from it all, even when the wifi failed.

Final Verdict: Should You Escape to Headlands?
Yes. But go in with open eyes (and maybe earplugs for the seagulls). The Headlands Hotel is charming, beautiful, and offers a genuinely relaxing (and delicious!) experience. The accessibility could be better, but the breathtaking ocean views, the excellent food, and the spa… make it worth a visit. Just be prepared for a little bit of chaos, some sunshine, and a whole lot of seagull chirping. Would I go back? Absolutely. Maybe I could convince myself to visit again during the off-season. This time, I'll go for it!
Unbelievable Treebo Pechis Castle Chennai: You WON'T Believe This!Headlands Hotel, Austinmer: A Messy, Wonderful Jaunt… or, The Real Deal.
Alright, so this isn't your polished Lonely Planet itinerary. This is my trip to Headlands Hotel in Austinmer, a place that promised ocean views and maybe, just maybe, a tiny sliver of serenity. Buckle up, because it's going to be… well, it's going to be me.
Day 1: Arrival, and the Battle for the Balcony (…and My Sanity)
- 10:00 AM - Sydney Departure: The Train from Hell. Okay, exaggeration, maybe. But getting to Wollongong via public transport with a suitcase that feels like it's filled with bricks is never fun. The train was delayed, naturally. I'm already regretting that extra coffee. The little old lady next to me kept sighing dramatically every five minutes. I swear, I could feel my blood pressure rising.
 - 12:00 PM - Austinmer Arrival & Hotel Check-In: Did I Pack the Right Attitude? The walk from the station (thank GOD it wasn't too far) was gorgeous. Coastal views, fresh air – Melbourne's grey winter had me yearning for sunshine. The exterior of the Headlands Hotel is exactly what you see online. The check-in was… functional. No effusive greetings, no "Welcome, darling!" just "Here's your key. You're on the third floor." Okay, fine.
 - 12:30 PM - Room Reveal & Balcony Blitz. I'd splurged on a "Ocean View Balcony Room," thinking, This. This is where I'll find peace. Spoiler alert: It wasn't quite as simple as that. Yes, the view was breathtaking. The waves crashed below, the sky was a perfect blue. But… the balcony was smaller than it appeared in the photos. And the chair looked like it belonged in a kindergarten. (Am I being overly dramatic? Probably.)
- Rambling digression: I need a good balcony. It’s not just about the view; it's about the feeling. The freedom. The fact that you can have a glass of wine in your pyjamas and no one can judge you… or at least, they shouldn't be able to! This balcony… well, it'll do. Maybe.

 - 1:00 PM - Lunch at Headlands Restaurant: Sushi Saviours. Thankfully, lunch was a triumph. The sushi was unexpectedly brilliant, and the service… much friendlier than check-in. I inhaled a plate of spicy tuna rolls and immediately felt a bit better. The ocean view from the restaurant made the balcony drama fade a little.
 - 2:30 PM - Beach Walk & "Contemplation": The Ocean Whispers, the Sand Burns. Okay, this is where things get real. Walking along Austinmer Beach was… well, it was soul-cleansing. The wind whipped my hair around, the sand was hot on my feet, and the sheer vastness of the ocean… it forced me to think. About life, about my job, about why I didn't pack more sunscreen. (Note to self: ALWAYS pack more sunscreen.) The waves were almost too loud, and the beauty was overwhelming - it hurt a little, knowing that I'd be leaving it.
- My Emotional Reaction: Seriously though, for the next 30 minutes, I was just there. At peace. It was the kind of moment that makes you forget all the little stresses and stupid arguments. Maybe I do have a soul.

 - 4:00 PM - Back To The Room: The "Balcony Moment of Resolve" My room. My tiny balcony. A decision must me made. I dragged the chair onto the balcony and planted myself there. I sipped on a lukewarm coffee (couldn't find a decent cafe on the way back from the beach.) I made myself embrace the smallness of everything. I made myself relax.
 - 6:00 PM - Aperol Spritz & Book on balcony: A tiny triumph. I finally made it. The sun set. A spectacular end.
 - 7:30 PM - Dinner at the Restaurant Below: Overcrowding and Mediocrity. I tried to get to the restaurant for dinner, but the booking was off; I had to go to an alternate place - which was disappointing.

Day 2: Wollongong Wanderings & the Quest for Coffee Perfection
- 8:00 AM - Wakeup with a view: More contemplation is needed. Okay, okay, I'm starting to like this whole "waking up to the ocean" thing.
 - 8:30 AM - Breakfast: More Mediocrity. The breakfast situation? Meh. Standard hotel fare. My coffee, however, was truly dreadful. This is a serious problem. A day without good coffee is a day wasted. The hunt for a decent brew begins…
 - 9:30 AM - Road Trip to the City - A quick dip in a different place is needed. The drive was fine. The city was not my vibe.
 - 12:00 PM - Return to Austinmer: The Quest for Coffee Continues. Found a cafe called "The Beach Break" in Austinmer, and the coffee was finally acceptable. I could have hugged the barista.
 - 1:00 PM - Lunch: Fish and Chips, the Aussie Way. Fish and chips on the beach, because, well, it's the law. It was delicious, in a greasy, salty kind of way. The seagulls were circling, plotting. I ate fast.
 - 2:00 PM - Relaxation and Reflection: The Art of Doing Nothing. Back to the room to do… nothing. Read a book. Stare at the ocean. Listen to the waves. This is what I came for.
 - 7:00 PM - Dinner: Local Gems from the Hotel. Dinner back at the hotel. It delivered well and brought a good end to the day.

Day 3: Departure & a Lingering Ocean Sigh
- 8:00 AM - Last Breakfast: The Coffee Crisis Continues. Still searching for the holy grail of hotel coffee. It remains elusive.
 - 9:00 AM - One Last Balcony Moment: One last sit on the balcony. One last inhale of that salty air. I'm starting to get used to the small space. Maybe it's charming.
 - 10:00 AM - Check Out: Easier than check-in. Farewell, Headlands.
 - 10:30 AM - Saying goodbye to the ocean.
 - 11:00 AM - Train Home: Post-Holiday Haze & Hope. The train ride back was less dramatic. I was tired in a good way. I left feeling relaxed.

Final Thoughts:
Headlands Hotel in Austinmer? It’s not perfect. It’s not a five-star experience. But it’s real. It’s beautiful. It has moments of absolute magic. And sometimes, that’s more than enough. Would I go back? Definitely. But next time, I’m bringing my own coffee machine. Just in case.
