Unbelievable Arenal Volcano Views: Roca Lodge - My Secret Paradise… (Maybe Not So Secret Anymore!) - A Messy, Honest Review

Okay, alright, buckle up buttercups. This isn't your sanitized Travelocity review. This is real life, and I just spent a week at Roca Lodge, supposedly a “secret paradise” with those unbelievable Arenal Volcano views. Let me tell you, the views are real. Unbelievable, even. But the "secret paradise" part? Well, let's just say it depends on your definition of "secret."

Exploring accessibility, amenities, dining, and those jaw-dropping volcano views. Keywords: Roca Lodge, Arenal, Costa Rica, Volcano, Review, Hotels, Spa, Accessibility, WiFi.

(Alright, Enough Business. Let's Get to the Good Stuff…)

First of all, that view. I'm talking, jaw-on-the-floor, Instagram-worthy levels of amazing. Waking up and seeing that perfect cone of a volcano, framed by lush greenery? Seriously, it’s worth the price of admission alone. I mean, damn. Even when the clouds decided to be dramatic and play peek-a-boo with the summit, it was still stunning. You could sit there all day, just… staring. Which, let's be honest, I did. A lot.

Accessibility - Okay, Let's Talk About That…

Now, about accessibility. Roca Lodge boasts "facilities for disabled guests," which is good, but let's be brutally honest here: Costa Rica isn't exactly known for its seamless accessibility. I didn't personally need fully accessible accommodations, but I did notice a few things. The lobby, restaurants, and some (but not all) common areas appeared to be relatively accessible. The elevator was a godsend for luggage (and my lazy self, let's be real). I saw ramps, and the staff seemed genuinely helpful and accommodating, but I’d recommend definitely contacting the lodge directly to confirm the specific needs can be met beforehand. Don't just assume. Always double-check! Because, you know, sometimes "accessible" means something totally different in practice.

Rooms - My Fortress of Solitude (or Not)…

The room itself? Well, it was clean, the air conditioning worked like a charm (thank GOD, the humidity!), and the bed was… comfortable. Think “firm, but fair.” My room had a window that opens (a small thing, but I appreciate it!), a desk, a safe box (always a good idea), and free Wi-Fi that actually worked (a miracle!). Seriously, the free Wi-Fi in all rooms was a lifesaver because, you know, I needed to update my Insta stories with photos of that freaking volcano! There was bottled water (free!) and coffee/tea maker (essential!), plus the daily housekeeping was efficient and friendly. They even had bathrobes… which I didn't use, because, well, comfort level zero. I was rocking my travel t-shirts and shorts the entire time. A mirror was also a plus.. to check my outfit was acceptable, haha.

I was surprised by the additional toilet but it came in use. But the soundproofing felt nonexistent at times. I got to know the neighbors, let's just say. The separate shower/bathtub was a plus.

Dining, Drinking, and Snacking - Food, Glorious Food…And Coffee…

Food! Ah, the food. The Asian breakfast felt a bit of a stretch, but the fresh fruit? Divine. Seriously, Costa Rican fruit is a religion. I always love coffee/tea in restaurant because I am that type of person who lives on coffee, all day all night. The Western breakfast was solid; the breakfast buffet was… adequate. Look, it’s hotel food. Fine. Edible. Convenient. I wouldn't rave about it, but I certainly wouldn't starve. They had desserts in restaurant which I always appreciated.

They had a bar – naturally. Poolside bar even! Happy hour was, well, happy. The drinks were strong, the music was… well, it was there. I am not picky, so I thought it was a good add-on. The restaurants were pleasant and had the right amount of variety. A la carte in restaurant was a good addition, especially given the location, but the salad in restaurant felt a little sad. They had a snack bar for the quick bites.

Relaxing and Unwinding - Spa Days and Sweat Sessions (Kind Of)…

Now, the "relaxing ways" part got a little… complicated. They have a Spa, Sauna, Steamroom, Massage, and Body wrap. The Body scrub and Foot bath sounded amazing, but between you and me, I was more interested in gazing at the volcano. But I did go to the Spa/sauna and the Swimming pool [outdoor] which were pretty darn good.

The fitness center? Okay, here’s where it gets messy. It existed. It had equipment. But the air conditioning was a bit… optimistic. Let's just say I broke a sweat before I even started working out. But hey, at least they Gym/fitness, right? Also, the Pool with view… YES. Absolutely a highlight.

Cleanliness and Safety - Sanitization Nation?

Cleanliness seemed a priority. I'm a bit of a sanitation freak, so I was relieved to see things felt clean. Anti-viral cleaning products, Daily disinfection in common areas, Hand sanitizer dispensers everywhere, and Rooms sanitized between stays made me feel a little more at ease in these times. The staff wore masks and seemed genuinely concerned about safety. They even had Individually-wrapped food options - which I always appreciate. Staff trained in safety protocol was a relief.

Services and Conveniences - The Little Things That Matter…or Don’t…

Concierge services were excellent. The staff were helpful and always had a smile and they also had a Gift/souvenir shop. They had a Dry cleaning, which might be an okay service, but I am not the type of person who uses it. Car park [free of charge] was a massive plus. The Elevator was life-changing. Laundry service was good, though I didn’t use it much. The Daily housekeeping and Luggage storage are fine.

Getting Around - Easy Peasy…Mostly!

They offered Airport transfer, which was super convenient (especially after a long flight). There was Car park [on-site] and Car park [free of charge] so that's good. Taxi service was available. I went with the free one.

For the Kids - Family Fun (Maybe)…

While I didn’t travel with kids, I noticed Family/child friendly was available, if you are into that. They provided a Kids meal and also had Babysitting service.

Things to Do - Beyond the Volcano (If You Can Tear Yourself Away…)

They had On-site event hosting but I didn’t see one, and Meeting/banquet facilities if you are in the area for work.

Little Niggles - The Imperfections That Make it Real

Okay, so the imperfections. The soundproof rooms weren't all that soundproof (as I mentioned before). The Internet was…sometimes…glitchy, but it’s probably Internet access – wireless for you! The room decorations were a bit… generic, but I didn’t go there to admire the artwork, right? The scale in the bathroom never lied.

Emotional Reactions – The Yays and Nays…

I loved it. Truly. That view! Everything else was kind of secondary. I would've stayed in a yurt with that view. The staff was friendly. The food was good enough. The spa was…relaxing. Was it perfect? No. Was it worth it? Absolutely. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Final Score - Roca Lodge: Secret Paradise?…Maybe…But Definitely Worth the Trip.

Look, if you're expecting perfection, you're going to be disappointed. But if you're looking for unbelievable views (Seriously, I can’t stress this enough), a comfortable basecamp for exploring Arenal, and a bit of Costa Rican charm, then Roca Lodge is a winner. Just manage your expectations, pack your insect repellent, and prepare to be mesmerized by that darn volcano. I give it a strong 4 out of 5 stars, because

Okay, buckle up, buttercups, because this isn't your beige-on-beige, perfectly-curated travel blog. This is REAL LIFE, Arenal Roca Lodge edition, and boy, did it give me life!

Arenal Roca Lodge: My Chaotic Costa Rican Symphony (aka, Actually, How We Did It…Sort Of)

Day 1: Arrival and the Great Mosquito Massacre of '23 (or, "Honey, where's the bug spray?" - A Recurring Theme)

  • Morning (Lost in Translation, Literally): Landed in San Jose, got through customs (thank the heavens for Google Translate!), and immediately realized my Spanish was about as useful as a chocolate teapot. The pre-arranged shuttle was a no-show (drama already!), so we ended up haggling with a taxi driver who swore he could get us to La Fortuna. He could, eventually. The drive was a blur of lush green and heart-stopping hairpin turns. My stomach did a weird dance, and I had to fight the urge to yodel.
  • Afternoon (Roca Lodge Redemption!): Arrived at Arenal Roca Lodge, and BAM! Jaw-dropping views. The volcano was lurking, majestic and slightly shy behind some clouds. Bungalow was cute as a button, albeit smaller than my New York apartment closet, but hey! This is Costa Rica! Immediately unpacked, then realized I packed all the essentials… except insect repellent. The mosquitoes took their first (and many) casualties.
  • Evening (Food, Fury, and the Forest): Dinner at the lodge restaurant. The fresh fish was divine, but the howler monkeys started their nightly serenade IMMEDIATELY when we were sitting, and one of my kids, bless his heart, screamed for several minutes thinking one was behind the door. After dinner, a guided night hike was planned. I was terrified of snakes, my husband was convinced sloths were everywhere, and my daughter just wanted to Instagram any creature. We saw a sloth (yay!), an armadillo (cute!), and a bunch of glowing bugs. I swear, one almost landed directly on my face. My heart rate spiked for approximately 12 hours straight.

Day 2: Waterfall Woes and the Volcano's Tease

  • Morning (La Fortuna Waterfall Shenanigans): So, this waterfall. STUNNING. Absolutely breathtaking. But the hike down? Murderous for my non-existent fitness level. My thighs are still screaming in protest. We attempted a swim (absolutely frigid!), but my kids mostly just splashed around. I tried to meditate by the falls, but the sheer power of the water and the hordes of tourists (including a rogue toddler with a death wish) made it impossible.
  • Afternoon (Volcano's Big Reveal… Kinda): Visited the Arenal Volcano National Park. The plan was a hike, and the views were amazing (when the clouds decided to lift), but more importantly, here is where I doubled down, this is the single experience, this is when I realized the universe was conspiring to make my mosquito bites fester. The hike was…fine. I would have enjoyed it more if I wasn't constantly swatting away bugs. Also, my waterproof camera? Not waterproof. Dead. Gone. Bye-bye pictures. My mood took a nosedive.
  • Evening (Hot Springs Heaven…and the Hangover): We hit the Tabacon Hot Springs. Pure, unadulterated bliss. Floating in thermal water under the stars, listening to the jungle sounds… it was perfection. Until the next day, when my wine-induced headache proved that I was enjoying it a little too much.

Day 3: Ziplining Zest and Culinary Catastrophes (and the Search for Coffee)

  • Morning (Zip-lining Disaster…and Triumph?!): Ziplining…I was terrified. Heights and I are not friends. But my crazy family convinced me, and actually… it was exhilarating! Screaming like a banshee for most of the ride, of course, but the adrenaline rush was incredible. The views? Epic. I almost threw up. But I didn't!
  • Afternoon (Cooking Class Chaos): Supposedly, there was a cooking class at the lodge. Apparently, "teaching" and "cooking" means something very different in Costa Rica. We were supposed to learn how to make empanadas, BUT nobody made the dough! It was a disaster. I almost managed to set the kitchen on fire, but the end result was edible (ish).
  • Evening (Coffee Craze and Goodbye): The search for the PERFECT Costa Rican Coffee went on. Every single cup tasted watery. BUT! Before leaving, I finally found it. A tiny, hole-in-the-wall cafe where the barista spoke only Spanish, but somehow still managed a cup of coffee that brought me to tears. Then… We packed, said our goodbyes to the friendly staff at Arenal Roca Lodge, who had tolerated our chaos with grace, and… we left.

Random Notes & Reflections:

  • Wildlife Encounters: I really thought I'd become besties with a sloth. Sadly, the sloths did not feel the same way.
  • Things I Wish I'd Packed: More bug spray. So. MUCH. MORE. Bug spray. And a decent camera. AND my Spanish-speaking friend from college!
  • The Food: Gallo Pinto (rice and beans) everyday! Wonderful!
  • The People: The Ticos (Costa Rican people) are incredibly lovely, patient, and helpful. Even when dealing with my questionable Spanish and general tourist-fueled chaos.
  • Final Verdict: Costa Rica is magical. Arenal Roca Lodge is beautiful and a fantastic basecamp for exploration. Even though I returned home with a mosquito bite collection worthy of a medical journal, a slightly damaged camera, a serious caffeine addiction, and a newfound respect for zip-lining, I'd do it all again in a heartbeat. Just… next time, I'm bringing industrial-strength bug spray. And maybe a translator. And a therapist.
